About 20 minutes from the airport on the GC-1.

Car hire in Maspalomas

Maspalomas has more rental offices than anywhere else in the south apart from the airport, and it's twenty minutes from the terminal. Staying here, the decision isn't where to find a car, there are plenty, but whether to collect at the airport on arrival or wait and have it at the hotel door.

Twenty minutes that change the maths

Maspalomas is the only resort area in the south close enough to the airport for collecting the car the next day to make sense. A taxi both ways is expensive, but the bus works well and is cheap. It's worth it when day one is a beach day and you'd rather not pay for twenty-four hours of rental to leave the car parked.

Parking by the dunes

The lighthouse and dunes area has parking, but it fills early and in high season there's nothing close from mid-morning on. The area's shopping centres are the alternative that works all year. Go to the beach first thing and parking stops being a problem: at nine there's still room almost everywhere.

What opens up to the north

From Maspalomas the road climbs inland through Fataga, a palm-filled ravine that leads to San Bartolomé de Tirajana and, higher up, to the summit and Roque Nublo. It's one of the finest drives on the island and an awkward one by bus. Westwards, Puerto Rico is half an hour and Playa de Mogán forty-five minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth collecting at the airport if I'm staying in Maspalomas?

Nearly always yes, because the daily rate is usually lower and it's only a twenty-minute drive. The exception is a night arrival, or a first day you don't plan to move: then collecting next day at a local desk saves you a day's rental.
