About 40 minutes from the airport on the GC-1.
Car hire in Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria
Puerto Rico holds most of the south-west's rental desks outside the airport: some in the shopping centre, others spread around the town. It's the comfortable alternative to the airport if you're staying here, in Amadores or in Playa de Mogán, with one condition almost nobody checks before booking: the opening hours.

The hours matter more than the price
Unlike the airport, which runs from dawn to dusk, several desks here close at midday and only open mornings at weekends. If your flight lands mid-afternoon you may find the shutter down, and on a Sunday afternoon there may be nobody to take the car back. Check the specific office's hours before booking: that rules the option in or out long before the daily rate does.
Parking here is the other problem
Puerto Rico is built on a hillside and the town has more cars than space. The shopping centre's underground car park is the safe bet and usually has room; the surface spaces by the beach fill up by mid-morning, earlier in summer. If you're staying up the hill among the apartments, ask whether your accommodation has a space before assuming you'll park at the door.
What opens up from here in half an hour
Amadores is five minutes away and Playa de Mogán fifteen, on a road of gentle bends with the sea always on your right. Tauro and Veneguera sit in between, and Veneguera is car-only. The other way, Arguineguín is ten minutes and Maspalomas half an hour. Based in Puerto Rico with a car, the whole south-west fits into morning trips.

Frequently asked questions
Are there car rental desks in Puerto Rico?
Yes, several. Some are in the shopping centre and others spread around the town, both international chains and Canarian firms. It's where you'll find the most options in the south-west without going up to the airport, though fleets and opening hours are more limited than there.
Is it cheaper to rent in Puerto Rico or at the airport?
Per day, almost always the airport: far more fleet competing there. Puerto Rico wins when you only want the car for two or three days, when you land at night, or when you'd rather not drive fifty minutes straight off the plane.
